Juvenile males will develope orange stripes and bars on the dorsum. It is thought that these colors prevent adult male agression while the young male establishes a territory. Hatchlings of both sexes can have these colors but as the lizards mature the colors go away. Then the males will develope them just before adulthood. These markings have been mistaken for gravid coloration in adult females.
